Effective management of teaching assistants

We published Working with Teaching Assistants — a good practice guide in October 2000 — a management tool for heads and teachers.Click here to view and download the document.  It has a useful set of self-audit indicators in section 3, which can be the basis of development of teaching assistants.

Copies of this publication are available by contacting DCSF Publications on 0845 60 222 60 quoting the reference number DCSF/0148/2000.

We also have a collection of case studies that relate to accounts of schools and LA services that have successfully used the good practice guide to review their procedures for managing and developing their teaching assistants. Click on to each individual case study below to view a case study.

In February 2003 the DCSF developed two videos called Working with Teaching Assistants in Primary Schools (DCSF/0114/2003) and Working with Teaching Assistants in Secondary Schools (DCSF/0115/2003). Both will be available to order by calling the DCSF publication line on 0845 60 222 60 quoting the reference numbers.

The purpose of the videos is to show how a variety of schools around the country have raised the profile, and developed the role and responsibilities, of their TAs. The videos also include inserts containing case studies that aim to promote discussion and share good practice in the management of TAs. They have been designed for headteachers, governors, teachers, and other school staff, including TAs. To view the inserts click here Primary / Secondary
