Introductory training for support staff in schools
Introductory training materials are provided to local authorities so that they can run courses to give new support staff the basics they need to know in their roles. The training is not designed to replace school-based induction — it is seen as complementary. It covers a limited but important range of knowledge and skills essential for newly appointed school support staff. The course also includes modules on behaviour management and inclusion, as well as important information about the role of teaching assistants and the context in which they work.
The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) is now responsible for updating and producing the induction materials for teaching assistants and school support staff. New, updated materials have been produced for 2006, which incorporate the Common core of skills and knowledge for the children's workforce. The materials are available to download and order from the TDA website.
