Special Schools Working Group
The report of the special schools working group maps out a future programme of change for the special schools sector.
The report proposes:
- That special schools should increasingly cater for the growing population of children with severe and complex special educational needs.
- That they should be outward-looking centres of expertise and work more collaboratively with mainstream schools.
- That the sector should go through a process of change in terms of leadership, teaching and learning, funding and structures and in the way in which they work with health, social services and other agencies which provide support beyond the classroom.
In order to inform its thinking on the report, the working group ran a number
of focus groups for professionals working in the field, and for parents, carers
and young people.
