Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Good Practice Guidance

This publication was developed by the DfES, the Department of Health and the Autism Working Group and includes representation from parent support organisations, practitioners, government agencies, local education authorities and researchers. It brings together comprehensive guidelines based on the expertise of practitioners and the Autism Working Group. Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Good Practice Guidance aims to raise awareness and standards of support for children with ASDs.

It promotes autism-aware provision for children with ASDs and early identification and early intervention to meet a child's special educational needs — whether in mainstream, special, autism-specialist or home settings. Based on some of the excellent practice occurring across the country, it demonstrates the principles of multi-agency support to meet the assessed needs of autistic children and their families.

The guidance is organised in two parts: the first, 01 Guidance on Autistic Spectrum Disorders, offers an introduction to teachers and others on the nature of autistic spectrum disorders and the principles of good provision for children with ASDs. The second part, 02 Pointers to good practice, helps service providers to develop their own provision for children with ASDs based on the accumulated experience of practitioners. It is not intended to be read as a whole but to be used as an audit tool to review and evaluate practice according to needs and priorities. As such, it is a valuable resource not only for those beginning to devise strategies for meeting autistic children's needs, but also for those who have already succeeded in making provision improvements and want to do more.
