Professional portfolios

Professional portfolios are an effective way of encouraging staff to take responsibility for their own professional development and portfolios enable staff to build up a record of their achievement which can be shared as part of the professional review process.

For teachers, the professional portfolio starts with the Career Entry Development Profile, is supported through the Induction portfolio and can then be edited and augmented throughout a teaching career.  It is especially useful in storing evidence that can be used for threshold, Chartered London Teacher status, AST applications, NCSL programmes and other job applications.

In an established professional learning community, all members of staff working in and with the school would maintain a professional portfolio.

A professional portfolio should belong to an individual and could include:

  • a job profile
  • curriculum vitae
  • relevant national standards/competencies
  • observation feedback
  • Performance Management objectives
  • individual learning plans
  • completed Performance Management reviews informed by:
    • evidence from classroom/work practice observation
    • evidence of impact on teaching and learning
  • professional development activities
  • certificates and achievements

The DfES has developed an electronic portfolio for teachers within the Teachernet website: Professional and Career Development. It is password protected, with the password set by each individual user.

The portfolio, Keeping Track, provides teachers with the opportunity to build and maintain an electronic professional portfolio (an e-portfolio) by:

  • showing teachers how to keep track of their own professional development
  • enabling teachers to record milestones and achievements as a basis for reflecting on progress and further development needs
  • making it easier for teachers to maintain and update records, including a CV.

Professional and Career Development is a website initially designed to support individual teachers in their first five years of teaching to:

  • explore career options
  • plan their career
  • understand the range and benefit of CPD
  • map out their progress and future plans
  • record their learning
  • record their achievements.

The site is being expanded with new modules in development including modules for support staff. The aim is that this will be a site supporting the professional development of all staff in a school.
