What is it?
Chartered London Teacher status (CLT) is designed to recognise and reward the skills and expertise of London teachers.
CLT status will:

Celebrate the quality of professional practice and commitment to continuing professional development by London teachers

Recognise the distinctive challenges and opportunities of teaching in London

Be part of, not additional to, a teacher's day-to-day work and integrated with performance management arrangements

Carry with it the award of a £1,000 lump sum on achievement of CLT status

Offer scope to combine with further professional development activities and accreditation

Build on best professional practice, including observation of others and teachers sharing experience
CLT status was launched in September 2004 and the first teachers gained CLT status in December 2006.
How do you achieve CLT status?
Any teacher, including Advanced Skills Teachers, Excellent teachers and members of the Leadership Grade, who work within the Greater London area can register to work towards achieving CLT status. In order to qualify a teacher should have been registered for two years and have worked as a teacher in London for four years. Participation is voluntary. Teachers can start working towards the status at any time but will be awarded CLT status only if they have crossed the threshold.
The achievement of performance management objectives related to a teacher's day-to-day work will be the evidence of meeting the CLT standards. There would be no need for the separate collection of portfolios of evidence.
Teachers' learning from lesson observations would also count as evidence towards CLT status. Teachers will be encouraged to undertake a number of lesson observations in other schools, some of which could be carried out on INSET days.
Any teacher who meets the standards will gain the status and the one-off payment of £1,000.
How long does it take?
From entry to the profession, it will normally take five years to achieve CLT status, or two years if you are an experienced teacher (i.e. already beyond the threshold, an Advanced Skills Teacher or on the Leadership Grade). You need a minimum of four years' service in London to be awarded CLT status.
What do teachers need to do?
1. Register. There will be a very simple and unbureaucratic process and, from 1 September 2004, teachers can register electronically or download the registration form at www.clt.ac.uk.
2. Notify your school that you wish to work towards the CLT and use the CLT standards to help guide your performance management process. Then, through your professional practice, demonstrate that you meet the standards for Chartered London Teacher status. The CLT involves four themes, plus a focus on a particular issue within a teacher's practice that involves overcoming barriers to pupils' learning.
