Broadband
What is it? Broadband is a generic term used to describe a wide
range of technologies delivering high-speed, always-on connections between
computers and the Internet.
The additional bandwidth provided by a broadband connection allows media-rich learning content and services to be delivered, and improves the reliability of access to online digital learning material used in the classroom.
How can it help? Broadband can help transform learning by ensuring pupils, teachers, schools and the wider community have effective, safe access to high-quality, media-rich learning resources and opportunities.
Increased quality and speed of connectivity will inspire suppliers and content developers to produce new and exciting educational content and services. Improved connectivity, content and services will enhance teachers' professional development and confidence.
Schools will be connected to the National Education Network which will link them to other schools, as well as FE and HE institutions. This will enable them to share content, and colloborate through video conferencing.
Key facts:
-
90% of all schools in England have high speed connections.
-
That means 99% of secondary schools and 89% of primary schools are connected.
