Professional development


Professional development in the use of ICT in teaching and learning is essential if schools are to realise their investment in ICT.

There are a wide range of national support programmes designed to help teachers, support staff and school leaders improve their use of ICT. They range from free diagnostic and exemplar materials to guidance on how funding can be used to facilitate peer-to-peer coaching and sharing best practice through local networks.

Hands on support

What is it? Hands on Support (HoS) provides teachers with the opportunity to share and spread good practice in using ICT to enhance teaching and learning across all subjects and key stages.

How can it help?  Skilled peers and professionals provide coaching and development for their fellow practitioners in the effective use of ICT, directly relevant to the subject or phase being taught, and can be classroom-based using the equipment that practitioners are familiar with.

ICT Across the Curriculum (ICTAC)

The ICTAC pack is a set of materials designed to promote the effective use of ICT across all secondary subjects at KS3. It builds on the work of the Secondary National Strategy's ICT strand, and the ICT skills that pupils bring to their subject lessons from their ICT lessons.

The ICT Register 

What is it? A register of over 200 schools around the country that can provide one-to-one support and advice on ICT.

How can it help? Get first-hand experience from fellow professionals who have already faced the issues your school may be facing.


Keys to Learning in Literacy and Mathematics

What is it? a DVD and booklet package that supports teachers in making links between their own use of ICT to support teaching and children's use of ICT to support their learning. Keys to Learning covers 7 areas of Literacy and Mathematics:

  • Early reading
  • Calculation
  • Reading on screen
  • Problem solving
  • Shape and space
  • Writing Key Stage 1
  • Writing Key Stage 2

It offers a wide variety of resources, including:

  • Professional development meeting outlines, supported by video clips of classroom practice and all of the resources needed to deliver them
  • Spreadsheet workbooks, interactive whiteboard files and interactive teaching programmes
  • Reading and writing kits including teaching sequences, interactive and multimodal texts, templates, digital images, sounds and videos
  • Lesson outlines for mathematics
  • Support for using ICT to develop early reading

How can it help? It can be used by leadership teams to support professional development, or individual teachers looking to develop their use of ICT, and that of their learners.

Leadership team toolkit for primary managers

What is it? A toolkit that provides a range of practical tools that support leadership teams in the essential task of leading the use of ICT across the curriculum. This is part of the Primary National Strategy's development work on improving the quality of learning and teaching through the effective use of ICT.

How can it help? Help school leadership teams develop and communicate a vision for ICT, plan implementation strategies and evaluate current provision and usage for ICT in their school.


Practical Support Pack

What is it?

The Practical Support Pack is an online collection of materials designed to help primary and Key Stage 3 secondary  teachers develop their teaching practice using ICT.


Primary Example materials

What is it? Over 180 video clips with lesson outlines, resource lists and more, showing ICT in use across nine subjects for all primary years and the six areas of learning for Foundation Stage.

How can it help? Offers teachers and early years providers ideas for the use of ICT across the curriculum. The materials may be used for planning and/or for professional development.


Secondary Leadership Team Toolkit

What is it? A CD-Rom providing a range of practical tools to guide school leadership teams on how to lead the effective use of ICT across the curriculum. Designed to meet the specific needs of each school. Comes complete with a booklet of case studies on extending learning beyond the school day, developing the 14-19 curriculum and personalising learning for all.

How can it help? Helps secondary leadership teams develop and communicate a vision for their school, explore and plan different implementation strategies and review and evaluate progress.


SLICT (Strategic Leadership of ICT)

What is it? A professional leadership development programme, designed by head teachers for head teachers, that works with head teachers to review their leadership and the possibilities that ICT can bring to extend and enhance learning and teaching in school.

How can it help? Provides an opportunity to work with up to 40 head teachers to consider key strategic issues, evaluate solutions and unlock the potential of ICT.


Strengthening pedagogy with ICT

What is it? A new interactive DVD from the Secondary National Strategy which builds on the Pedagogy and Practice: Teaching and Learning in Secondary Schools (TLSS) materials. This new material looks at the key question: how can effective use of ICT support and enhance good pedagogical approaches in classrooms?

How can it help?  It gives teachers a staff-development framework to work within and develop their confidence in identifying where ICT could be used an an appropriate tool for learning and teaching. The focus is on how the use of ICT can 'enhance' rather than simply 'replace' current practice.

Use of Interactive Whiteboards in Subject Teaching

What is it? A series of booklets focusing on a particular subject. Each is clear and easy to follow, with practical advice and information.

How can it help? Helps you take the first steps in using an interactive whiteboard to support your subject teaching.

What are they?  Subject-specific video case studies showing different ways in which ICT has been used to enhance learning and teaching in a range of KS3 and KS4 subjects. Hear teachers talking about their experiences of using ICT and see pupils using ICT in the classroom.
