Breakfast clubs

New food-based standards for all school food other than lunches was introduced in September 2007. For guidance on implementing the new food-based standards for breakfast clubs visit the School Food Trust's website.

The outputs from the Department of Health's Food in Schools Healthier Breakfast Clubs project will assist schools to develop and implement a healthy breakfast club.

  • When setting up a breakfast club, go to The British Nutrition Foundation for help and advice.
  • The Food in Schools Healthier Breakfast Club project runs across six LEA clusters in the West Midlands. The project looks to develop a sustainable approach to development through partnership working.
  • The Community Food and Health (Scotland) produced a toolkit Breakfast Clubs: More of a Head Start  (pdf) that gives a step-by-step guide to setting up and running breakfast clubs.
  • Read case studies on breakfast clubs.
  • The Leeds Children's Breakfast Initiative (LCBI) is a website providing information to aid those setting up breakfast clubs, and includes sample menu ideas, safe food-handling practices, sources of funding, and advice on employment, equipment and play.
  • Have a look at Breakfast Clubs: A How To Guide from the New Policy Institute (NPI). This report is designed to answer all your questions about setting up a breakfast club. It includes case studies from schools who have already set up a breakfast club, suggestions on how to plan your club, information on diet and nutrition, and advice on how to find funding.
