Food Technology

Food Technology is part of Design and Technology, and is compulsory at primary level. It is also offered by nearly 90 per cent of schools at secondary level.

  • Food Standards Agency: Getting to Grips with Grub offers a wealth of information about food, diet and nutrition. Includes 'Ask an expert' and 'Your questions answered'.
  • DfES Food in Schools: Establishing a Food Partnership. Here, secondary-school Technology teachers are trained to support local primary-school colleagues to teach practical cooking in the classroom and to work towards the National Healthy School Standard.
  • DATA covers how secondary food-technology teachers support primary colleagues to teach practical cooking in the classroom.
  • The British Nutrition Foundation gives a framework of competence-statements outlining how food, nutrition and cooking skills should develop for children aged 5 to 16. Telephone 020 7404 6504 for more details.
  • Dish it Up! An interactive, mulitimedia CD-Rom  designed for 11— to 12-year-olds to motivate them to eat healthily. To order telephone 0845 606 0667 and quote 'Dish It Up CD-Rom'. 
  • The FSA Focus on Food Campaign supports teachers in delivering a practical approach to food-education and developing an appreciation of food and healthy eating using a state-of-the-art mobile kitchen.
  • Active Kids Get Cooking supports healthy schools initiatives throughout the UK by demonstrating your commitment to food education, healthy eating and cooking. Active Kids Get Cooking is the new name for Taste of Success.
  • The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme is part of the 5 A DAY programme, and offers materials and advice from coordinators. Telephone the DH on 020 7210 4850 for more details.
  • The Grab 5! action pack focuses on food and healthy eating in the Key Stage 2 national curriculum, and contains a series of classroom activities and worksheets.
