Low-Level Radioactive Substances in Schools in England
On 1 September 2008, CLEAPSS published its new edition of the good
practice guidance (L93. Managing Ionising Radiations and Radioactive Substances
in School, etc). With support from the DCSF and as endorsed by its
ministers, this is available for all schools and copies have been sent to all
local authorities, which can order printed copies for their schools if
desired.
This important document coincides with the Department's revocation of the legal requirement for schools to obtain the Secretary of State's approval before using low-level radioactive materials in the science curriculum. In practical terms this means that schools can acquire new sources under advice as necessary from their Radiation Protection Adviser without intervention by the Department.
The new guidance can be downloaded.
