Childcare in extended schools guidance 2002

Providing opportunities and services for all

This guidance is statutory guidance to which school governing bodies must have regard by virtue of section 28(5)(a) of the Education Act 2002.

Click on the links on the left hand side to access the different chapters of the guidance.

The aim of this guidance is to help schools (primarily) looking to set up childcare, through new powers which governing bodies acquired in September 2002 under sections 27 and 28 of the Education Act 2002. But it is also intended to help other stakeholders (parents, children, local authorities (LAs), Early Years Development and Childcare Partnerships, local strategic partnerships (LSPs and others) to understand the processes involved. These other stakeholders will, after all, be affected by what school governing bodies decide to do, and will have a key role to play in helping the school to succeed.

The guidance should be read in conjunction with the main extended schools guidance — Extended Schools providing opportunities and services for all.

While it offers a step-by-step approach, no guidance can hope to offer the answer to everything. What it seeks to do is to offer a framework, and pointers to other guidance, organisations and people who can help.
