Case studies
Visit the 'core offer' and 'standards' sections to find out how schools are putting extended services into action. Our publications and practical know-how leaflets also contain good practice examples.
Case study bank
There is an extensive case study bank organised by theme and by location on the website of our partner organisation, the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). These are being collected by DCSF, TDA, 4Children and ContinYou.
Themes include: governance, leadership, parenting support, consultation, holiday activities, childcare, swift and easy referral, health, children centres, local authorites, integrated working, school companies, standards, charging, inspection, community use, partnership/cluster working. These are being added to all the time. You can also add your own case study.
See also case studies on Sure Start Children's Centres and Children's Centres on schools sites on the Together for Children website.
Rural schools
To read how rural schools, specifically, are developing case studies visit the Continyou website case study bank. These will be transferred over to the TDA website in due course.
Feedback
Please let the extended schools team know how useful you find these case studies and if you would like your extended service to be featured — extended.schools@dcsf.gsi.gov.uk
Quotes from head teachers
"I think our being an extended school made a significant contribution to a positive outcome [with an Ofsted inspection]... it was quite evident that by actively developing extended schools services and embracing the whole community it was having a direct impact on the school".
"As well as giving young people a well-rounded education, it's important to offer them a range of other experiences. And that's what being an extended school is all about".
"The integrated approach is working and we are laying firm foundations for improving children's life chances".
