Getting it Right

A web-based training pack for clerks and chairs of Governors' Discipline Committees and Independent Appeal Panels.

Produced for the DfES by Information for School and College Governors (ISCG).

The target groups for the training are clerks and chairs of governors' exclusion committees (known as governors' discipline committee) and clerks and chairs of independent exclusion appeal panels (IAPs).

There are five modules, each of which can be adapted for training separate groups or for individuals working on their own. Details of how this might be done are given in the Tutor Notes. However, training all four groups together is a far more effective way of improving the fairness and consistency of exclusion appeals. All four groups have much to learn from one another. They need to understand each other's roles, and their varying perspectives. It is important, however for the tutor to emphasise throughout their different roles and responsibilities.

The central feature of this pack is an exclusion narrative called the Canterbridge Tales.

This includes a factual summary of what happened, and a number of stories written from the point of view of the various parties to the case. There is also a selection from the kind of papers you would expect to receive when hearing an exclusion appeal. We hope that this will engage the interest of the participants, and also expose them to the very different agendas that people bring to an exclusion hearing.

The questionnaire in Module 1 covers different aspects of the law and good practice. It should be sent out to participants in advance of the seminar, so that it can be completed beforehand, together with the Canterbridge Tales.
