Religious Education
Teachers at all Key Stages will find guidance and resources for teaching Religious Education (RE) in this section.
RE is a component of the basic curriculum and is taught to all pupils unless withdrawn from these lessons by their parents. In October 2004, the first non-statutory national framework for teaching Religious Education was launched. Developed jointly by the QCA, the DCSF, major UK faith groups and RE professionals, this framework:
-
endorses the entitlement to RE for all pupils, irrespective of race and culture
- sets out national expectations for teaching and learning in RE
- provides guidance for teachers.
Read the press notice announcing the launch of the framework here.
Assembly ideas
TeacherNet's Assemblies section contains a wealth of resources for
preparing assemblies for use with your class, year group or school. It also
provides a template and hints for organising your own material.
Teachers TV
Don't forget that Teachers TV offers a wealth of resources for teachers,
including curriculum-based programmes for use in the classroom.
Collective worship
The A to Z of School Leadership covers the provision of Religious Education and
includes guidelines for a collective worship policy covering the right to
withdraw. For maintained schools other than those designated as having a
religious character, Ofsted's section 10 inspection will cover RE and
the act of collective worship.
Schemes of work for Religious Education
The national curriculum outlines a programme of study for RE which is complemented by
information on QCA/DCSF's schemes of work for Religious Education for Key Stages 1 and 2 and Key Stage 3.
Lesson plans
Visit the TeacherNet's lesson plans for free online RE resources for both
primary and secondary schools.
Teachers' recommendations
Forums and chat rooms are a great way to share ideas with fellow RE
teachers and pick up tips, as are lists of favourite or popular websites. The
Virtual Teacher Centre forum hosts discussions on all
curriculum subjects. Join the RE forum to chat about curriculum issues, pick up
useful-site suggestions and ask for advice.
ICT in RE teaching
ICT helps pupils learn in a stimulating and inspiring way. If you need
more ideas for how to integrate ICT into your teaching, visit the Becta site and the national curriculum's RE in
Action site.
Overseas teachers
TeacherNet's Teaching in England site has a dedicated RE page to
accustom teachers from other countries to the curriculum and teaching methods
when preparing for a move to England.
Take a look at a further selection of sources of information.
Don't forget you can also search for resources by
subject in TeacherNet's useful sites directory.
