Activemark, Sportsmark and Sports Partnership Mark 2007

For the second year, the annual awards will reward delivery of the national PE, School Sport and Club Links strategy. Schools will be automatically assessed for one of the marks through the national school sport survey, which all School Sport Partnership schools take part in.
Following feedback from the 2006 awards, the awarding criteria has changed slightly in 2007, so the criteria will be as follows:
Activemark 2007
Schools will receive the mark if:
-
The percentage of pupils participating in at least 2 hours high quality PE and school sport each week is significantly above the national average; and
-
they held a sports day; and
-
they had met or bettered the national average for pupils involved in sports leadership and volunteering (this would not apply to infant schools), or, the percentage of pupils participating in sports clubs linked to their school.
Sportsmark 2007
Schools will receive the mark if:
-
The percentage of pupils participating in at least 2 hours high quality PE and school sport each week is significantly above the national average; and
-
the school held a sports day; and
-
the school met or bettered the national average in three or more of the following areas;
-
percentage of pupils taking part in inter-school competitive sport;
-
the range of sports the school offers;
-
the percentage of pupils participating in sports clubs linked to their school; or
-
the percentage of pupils actively involved in sports leadership and volunteering.
-
Sports Partnership Mark 2007
Partnerships will receive the mark if:
-
at least 90 per cent of pupils across the partnership were doing at least 2 hours high quality PE and school sport each week.
In addition, in all cases, an over-riding condition will apply whereby holders of the 2006 awards would be automatically awarded the 2007 awards if they have maintained or improved their provision in all key areas.
Awarding Process
The list of successful schools will be published shortly after the results of the 2006-07 School Sport Survey are announced in the autumn of 2007. Certificates will be sent directly to schools. An e-mail will be sent to Partnership Development Managers informing them of the schools in their partnership have been awarded an Activemark or Sportsmark. They will then be able to download the logos from the School Sport Xchange (ssx.youthsporttrust.org/subpage/welcome/index.htm) for them to distribute to schools.
Frequently asked questions
1. How long will the award last?
The kitemarks are awarded each year — automatically through the school sport survey — so last for 12 months from when the awards are announced in the autumn.
2. Are the kitemarks open to independent schools?
If an independent school is linked to a School Sport Partnership and takes part in the school sport survey, then they will be eligible for a kitemark.
3. I'm an independent school, how do I become involved in a School Sport Partnership?
You will need to discuss this with your local Partnership Development Manager. To find out who this would be, phone 0870 190 6040 or email ssco@aeat.co.uk
4. Are the awards open to special schools and PRUs?
Yes, as long as the special school/PRU is within a school sport partnership and takes part in the annual school sport survey then it will be automatically assessed for one of the kitemarks. Special schools/PRUs with primary aged pupils will be assessed for Activemark, those with secondary aged pupils will be assessed for Sportsmark.
5. What does the school get?
Each school which qualifies for one of the kitemarks will receive a certificate. The school will also be able to use the kitemark logo for the relevant year on their headed paper and other documentation.
6. Why did the schemes run by Sport England need to be changed?
Sport England decided that they would no longer run the schemes and schools felt they should continue in some form. The marks were also reviewed because they were created before the national school sport strategy was launched. So in 2004 Sport England and the Departments for Education and Skills (DfES) and for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) consulted on proposals to develop and reintroduce — from 2006 — Activemark, Sportsmark and introduce a new Sports Partnership Mark. The proposals received strong support.
