National Languages Strategy
The National Languages Strategy for England 'Languages for All: Languages for Life' was published in December 2002. Its key aims are to:
- improve the teaching and learning of languages
- deliver an entitlement to language learning for all pupils throughout Key Stage 2
- give languages learning a key place in the transformed secondary school of the future.
The Languages Work campaign was launched in September 2004, coinciding with the European Day of Languages. Funded by the DCSF as part of the National Language Strategy it provides a range of resources to help teachers and related professionals.
One of the key commitments in the Languages Strategy is the introduction of a new national recognition scheme, the Languages Ladder, to complement existing qualifications and provide an alternative route for people to get credit for their languages skills.
Read a summary of this, or see the full
strategy. The DCSF has launched a website dedicated to language learning
where you will find more information about the Language Strategy. Key Stage 2
language pathfinders have been set up to foster good practice and develop
effective ways of delivering the strategy in schools. Read more about the 19 pathfinder
LAs.
