Art and Design
Teachers at all Key Stages will find guidance and resources for teaching art and design in this section. This subject embraces painting, textiles, sculpture, digital mixed media, architecture, design and crafts.
Schemes of work for art and
design
The National Curriculum outlines a programme of study for art and design.
- During Key Stage 1 pupils develop their creativity and imagination by exploring the visual, tactile and sensory qualities of materials and processes.
- Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 introduce them to more complex and sustained activities, as well as improving their control of materials, tools and techniques.
- QCA/DCSF complement the curriculum with schemes of work for art and design for Key Stages 1 and 2 and Key Stage 3.
- Resources for the applied art and design GCSE can be found at Curriculum Online.
ICT in teaching
For practical help on using ICT in your teaching, visit Learning and
Teaching Using ICT — Practical Support Pack, a TeacherNet website
which has lesson plans, multimedia resources, video case studies and ICT
support materials. Written by experts in teaching subjects using ICT, and with
the support of the Primary and Secondary National Strategies, the support
pack has everything needed to teach art and design using ICT, from
preparation and planning to homework and evaluation.
QCA has developed support materials for the Teacher Assessment Activities series in art and design, and ICT. These materials are fully integrated with the National Curriculum, and provide examples of assessment activities to help identify, track and enhance pupil progress. Each book includes activities and teacher guidance.
More ideas for how to integrate ICT into your teaching can be found at the Becta website and the National Curriculum's Art and Design in Action site.
Museums and galleries
In April 2004, the DfES and the Department for Culture, Media and
Sport announced a joint investment of more than £7 million over the next
two years. The target is to strengthen the capacity of museums and
galleries to support children and young people's education.
TeacherNet's Museums and galleries site contains links to the
24 Hour
Museum for a comprehensive directory of UK museums, galleries and
heritage sites. You may also find it useful to consult Gallery Finder.
Lesson plans
You will find free online art and design resources for both
primary and secondary schools in TeacherNet's lesson plans pages.
Teachers' recommendations
Forums and chat rooms are a great way to share ideas and pick up tips
with fellow art and design teachers, as are lists of favourite or popular
websites. The Education Forum hosts discussions on all
curriculum subjects. Join the art and design forums to chat about curriculum
issues, pick up useful site suggestions and ask for advice.
Teachers TV
Don't forget that Teachers TV offers many resources for teachers,
including curriculum-based programmes for use in the classroom.
Assembly ideas
TeacherNet's Assemblies section contains resources for preparing
assemblies for use with your class, year group or school. It also provides a
template and hints for organising your own material.
Continuing professional development (CPD) in Art and Design
TeacherNet's CPD page offers advice on how to make progress in
your teaching career. It includes any activity that increases teachers'
knowledge and understanding, and their effectiveness in schools. The National Society for Education in
Art and Design provides further information.
Overseas teachers
TeacherNet's Teaching in England site has a dedicated art and
design page to help accustom teachers from other countries to the
curriculum and teaching methods when preparing for a move to England.
Take a look at some more useful links.
Don't forget you can also search for resources by subject in TeacherNet's useful sites directory.
