Helping teachers get up to speed with teaching GCSE

Up to Speed with GCSE provides notes for tutors in the training of overseas trained teachers (OTTs), returners to the profession and supply teachers in the teaching of the GCSE syllabus.

The training is intended to help those teachers understand the demands of the GCSE examination system and to be effective, as soon as possible, in teaching GCSE students.

Up to Speed with GCSE includes information on the following:

Pre-course reading and tasks
These provide the participants with important background information concerning GCSEs, their place in the National Qualifications Framework and their relationship to the National Curriculum.

Content of the training
The training comprises some pre-course reading and tasks, and a two-and-a-half-hour training session with post-course tasks. The training session can be run over a half-day or as two 75-minute sessions.

Training materials
Most of the materials you will need are provided, including:

  • masters to make slides
  • masters to make handouts
  • a suggested outline of an invitation letter to participants
  • pre-course reading and tasks to photocopy for participants.

Participants are directed to the subject-specific GCSE booster as an aid to their work on revision.

Tutors who are part of the training institutions can order a copy of the pack from DCSF publications on 0845 60 222 60.
