GCSE booster packs and KS4 Learning Challenge

The GCSE booster packs and KS4 Learning Challenge provide a set of materials offering guidance for teachers and school leaders on organising a revision programme and preparing students for the GCSE examinations.

GCSE booster packs

GCSE booster resources are suitable for all GCSE students, but they are particularly aimed at those who are predicted a grade D and need support to achieve grade C at GCSE. The pack provides teaching strategies in each subject and highlights the main factors that cause borderline D/C students to most commonly lose marks in exams. It also provides advice on planning an active revision programme and organising revision surgeries. As well as providing guidance to heads of department and teachers of the above subjects, the pack should also prove useful to Year 11 pastoral heads, tutors and mentors.

The first GCSE booster pack, issued in 2003, contains a series of leaflets for both teachers and students in eight of the most popular subjects:

  • English language — teacher, student
  • English literature — teacher, student
  • Mathematics — teacher, student
  • Science — teacher, student
  • French — teacher, student
  • German — teacher, student
  • Geography — teacher, student
  • History — teacher, student

Students and parents may find it helpful to focus on those areas of each subject students typically find difficult and provide strategies for revision. There is also a photocopiable leaflet with tips on revising and preparing for and taking exams.

The second pack, GCSE booster pack: 2004 supplement, comprises a cover note for this supplement, the guidance booklet and a number of separate leaflets for teacher, students and coursework as follows:

  • Art & design — teacher, student
  • Design & technology — teacher, student
  • English — coursework
  • French — coursework
  • Geography — coursework
  • German — coursework
  • History — coursework
  • ICT -  teacher, student, coursework
  • Mathematics — coursework
  • Religious studies — teacher, student, coursework
  • Science — coursework

A 2006 calendar, revision guide and leaflet for parents are also available. The GCSE revision calendar for 2006 includes a blank for students to fill in their own examinations, useful revision suggestions and a link to the GCSE website with all the examination dates. The leaflet for parents contains information about the tests and guidance on supporting pupils in all three core subjects.

The Key Stage 4 Learning Challenge
The Key Stage 4 Learning Challenge provides a set of modules to help students improve the general skills they will need in planning their time and coursework, doing revision and approaching their GCSE examinations.

You can download the Key Stage 4 Learning Challenge here.

The main aim is to help students improve their preparation for examinations, and develop their confidence in completing coursework and sitting examinations. The Key Stage 4 Learning Challenge is linked to subject-specific booster material to help subject teachers provide intervention for students who need some extra help in preparing for GCSE examinations in some subjects.
