Laura Warren, communications manager at the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTA), describes her role in making sure the voices of parents are represented
The National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTA) represents over six million parents through their involvement with NCPTA member associations. A key objective for the NCPTA is to raise the voice and profile of parents and to support greater involvement of parents with their child's learning.
The NCPTA has represented the voice of parents for over 50 years. During this time parents have always striven to work in partnership with the teachers and schools their children attend. Effective PTAs are about much more than their traditional fundraising role. They are increasingly involved in a wide range of aspects of daily school life and work closely with teachers and staff in supporting clear communications between home and school.
With many parent volunteers already taking an active role in supporting their children's school, parents are natural conduits for both supporting school-led learning outside the classroom as well engaging parents in the learning experience they can provide for their own children, outside the classroom.
A key priority for the NCPTA, as a member of the LOtC National Advisory Group, is to ensure that the needs of parents are represented fully and that the value of parental consultation is considered at all levels. All parents want the best for their child and will seek guidance and information to make this happen. Parents will have a significant impact on the delivery of the LOtC Manifesto and it is vital that, as a group, parents are able to make informed choices.
Many PTAs are already involved in LOtC at a local level. Through membership magazines and newsletters the NCPTA is highlighting the profile of this good practice to other members and providing support information and background on how parents can get involved.
