The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Setting the standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to five

A revised version of the EYFS Statutory Framework and Practice Guidance document was published on 19 May 2008. The changes made provide clarification of areas where feedback from local authorities, schools and early-years providers has indicated this would be helpful. None of the legal requirements has changed.

Access the Early Years Foundation Stage CD-ROM  for walk-throughs and interactive search facilities.

EYFS Themes and Principles

Examples of effective practice, with video clips, research links and resource downloads:

  • A unique child
Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
  • Positive relationships
Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person.
  • Enabling environments
The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children's development and learning.
  • Learning and development
Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected.

If you have any feedback or enquiries about the EYFS, you can communicate them to the Department for Children, Schools and Families via the EYFS feedback form.
