Sustainable Schools
FAQs
1. What is sustainable development?
According to the UK sustainable development strategy Securing the Future the goal is 'to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life, without compromising the quality of life of future generations.'
Essentially, sustainable development means finding ways to improve people’s quality of life without damaging the environment, and without storing up problems for the future, or transferring them to other parts of society or other countries. It is an innovative agenda, inviting us to question what we mean by progress and to rethink how we organise our lives and work so that we don’t destroy our most precious resource – the planet.
2. What is a sustainable school?
A school that is guided by the principles of care:
- care for oneself (our health and well-being)
- care for others (across cultures, distances and generations)
- care for the environment (both near and far)
About Sustainable Development provides a more detailed explanation.
