Early professional development
The Early Professional Development scheme was piloted in 12 LEAs (Birmingham, Brighton and Hove, Cornwall, Croydon, Cumbria, Hammersmith and Fulham, Hampshire, Kensington and Chelsea, Lewisham, Newham, Stoke-on-Trent and Wakefield) between October 2001 and July 2004.
The scheme was not continued beyond the pilot phase and there are no plans to introduce it in the future. This is in line with the general move away from centrally-funded Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities. From April 2004, extra funding was made available directly to schools through the main Local Government finance system, which enables them to take decisions about what professional development best meets their and their teachers' needs.
