Reports about GCSEs and A Levels by Ofqual
Friday 27 March 2009
Ofqual has published various reports on the standard of GCSEs and A Levels in different subjects.
Ofqual is an independent public body which monitors the standards of exams
and qualifications. On 27 March Ofqual published various reports on the
standards of GCSEs and A Levels in different subjects. In mathematics and
English literature Ofqual said that 'standards have generally been
maintained and ... the system is generally in good health.'
Ofqual found that there were problems with the standard of GCSE science exams
in certain years. These problems largely affected the way that science GCSEs
taken in summer 2007 were assessed.
Ofqual has already taken action to put this right for this summer's exams.
There is no need for any action to be taken by students who took these exams or
who are due to sit science GCSE this summer. This issue is about the assessment
of GCSE science, and is not a reflection on the hard work of young people or
their teachers.
