Higher Level Teaching Assistants — HLTAs

The Teacher Training Agency (TTA) has developed and published standards for higher level teaching assistants, linking to those for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).  These can be accessed via  www.hlta.gov.uk

Higher level teaching assistant roles have greater complexity and autonomy than other classroom support roles.  The HLTA standards reflect the significant contribution HLTAs are expected to play in teaching and learning activities — for example, contributing to the planning and preparation of lessons; monitoring pupils' participation and progress; providing feedback to teachers; giving constructive support to pupils as they learn; and working with individuals, small groups and whole classes where the assigned teacher is not present.

All of the latest information on the HLTA initiative including details about the standards, the training and assessment programme and funding for training can be found on www.hlta.gov.uk All enquiries regarding HLTAs should be directed to the TTA's email enquiry line at hltaenquiries@teach-tta.gov.uk
