Net Capacity
The guidance document 'Assessing the Net Capacity of Schools' as updated in August 2002, (ref. DfES/0739/2001 REV), is available on the Net Capacitywebsite. This document describes the 'net capacity assessment method' which replaces all previous methods of assessing the capacity of maintained mainstream schools in England. The guidance explains why the new method has been introduced, how it works, and what needs to be measured. It also gives examples of completed net capacity assessment forms for both primary and secondary schools.
Net Capacity Assessment Method for Secondary Schools: all those involved in assessing the net capacity of secondary schools should be aware of the contents of an open letter of 12 April 2002 from the Department to LA contacts. This letter highlighted the fact that we were reviewing the formulae used in the capacity calculation for secondary schools, in light of concerns expressed by some LAs that the method seemed to be resulting in a general upward trend in capacities when compared to the previous method of assessment. We have now completed this review and a revised version of the net capacity assessment form for secondary schools is now available.
