Background

We are working with key partners in local authorities to make sure training opportunities exist in the management of data. We acknowledge that the school workforce and LA staff need to have the necessary competences to manage and use data effectively and we are working to introduce new qualifications and learning programmes to enable staff to build on their skills.

For School Support Staff

The e-skills ITQ is a flexible ICT qualification with a range of optional units, including a module on the use of specialist software. The qualification assesses prior learning and experience, with training to fill the gaps. This has received such a positive response from schools that we have worked with E-skills and other key partners to include ITQ units within the new VQ for all school support staff. Work is currently taking place to produce evidence requirements for this unit, to enable support staff to gain accreditation for their skills in using school MIS.

The Award and Certificate in Suport Work is a nationally recognised, flexible VQ for school support staff that recognises support staffs' existing qualifications and skills and enables them to fill any gaps in their knowledge with training. It allows support staff to select from a range of units that match their specific job roles and particular training needs.

Information about the content of the qualifications is available from openquals on the QCA website (search on 'school support', then search within results 'school support')

For School Leaders we are collaborating with NCSL to include content on effective use of data within all NCSL's leadership programmes.  A website on the effective use of data is being developed including an on-line learning community for school leaders and a hot seat programmes with access to experts in the field.

For LA Staff a resource pack has been produced on Competences for Data & Information Professionals in LAs and Children's Services.  It was produced as a result of collaboration between the DfES, Confed's Virtual Staff College, The Education Network and LA colleagues.  The pack is intended to be a working toolkit to support the work of data professionals.  It can be used for recruitment, performance management and training and development purposes.

The pack provides:

  • A set of competencies for data and information professionals
  • Person specifications at Strategic, Managerial and Operational levels
