The DfES does not collect information about term dates for individual schools.
Term dates and holidays, in England, are set:
-
for community and voluntary controlled schools, by the Local Authority (LA)
-
for foundation and voluntary aided schools, by the governing body
Consequently, holiday dates are held locally and can be obtained by directly contacting the relevant LA.
However, in instances where an LA has agreed in principle to adopt the Standard School Year (SSY) — see the FAQ section for further information — it is possible to a) view a list of such LAs and b) the proposed holiday dates for 2004-5 and 2006-08 by accessing the Local Government Agency's (LGA) website. LGA has also produced a calendar outlining the school holiday dates for 2005-06.
The DfES leads on the length of the school year in England, whereas the Scottish Executive and the Welsh Assembly Government are responsible in Scotland and Wales. Local authorities or governing bodies decide the timing of holidays for schools in England.
