Safety education guidance for head teachers, teachers and school governors was issued by the DfES in 2002. It has been designed to provide authoritative guidance for safety education as part of the PSHE framework which includes the theme of developing a safe, healthy lifestyle. It also supports the National Healthy School Standard (NHSS) which contains safety as one of its eight themes.

The guidance draws on the expertise of representatives from many different agencies and covers the following:

  • Definition of what is meant by safety and safety education
  • Demonstration of the need for safety education
  • An indication of national curriculum requirements and other government recommendations for safety education
  • Recommendations for appropriate approaches to teaching and learning
  • Demonstration of how safety education builds on and enhances existing curriculum provision
  • Recommendation of sources of support for schools
  • Provides examples of good practice

Key Stage 4 course in basic hazard awareness

This new QCA approved course will help students to develop their awareness of workplace hazards and how they can cause harm. It will provide an essential foundation for lifelong learning in health and safety and also supports delivery of:

  • The general teaching requirement for health and safety in the National Curriculum that students should be taught about hazards, risks and risk control, including the ability to recognise hazards
  • The National Curriculum's non-statutory guidelines for Key Stage 4 for work-related learning, element 8 of which suggests that students should be able to 'describe the main hazards associated with particular types of workplace'

The course will be launched as a free download in December 2006. Register your interest in advance by visiting the Wiseup2work office and clicking on the picture of a laptop computer. Note that you will require the latest Flash plugin to view the site.
