Gap year policy
For many young people the idea of taking a year out between school and university is an attractive one. It is important that in considering this route, young people are able to make informed choices.
Although there are no specific actions required of teachers by law, they will often find themselves in the role of adviser and as such need to be well informed about gap year opportunities and about the questions which young people should be asking providers.
The Year Out Group, an association of leading year out organisations, has been formed to:
- promote the concept and benefits of well-structured year out programmes
- promote models of good practice
- help young people and their advisers to select suitable and worthwhile projects.
The Group is also working towards developing clear quality standards for organisations which run year out activities.
The Year Out Group website gives more information about the aims of the Group and sets out adviser guidelines. The guidelines list useful questions which students and advisers should be asking about year out opportunities. The site also has links to the websites of the Group’s member organisations, which give detailed information about the opportunities available, about fundraising as well as answers to a variety of frequently asked questions.
