Further information
The National School Fruit Scheme is a Department of Health led initiative, which will entitle four— to six-year-olds and three-year-olds registered at schools with a free piece of fruit every day.
Following successful piloting, the scheme is now being extended throughout England on a region by region basis. The expansion began with the West Midlands in summer term 2002, followed by London in the autumn term, the North West in spring 2003 and the East Midlands in summer 2003. The North East is due to start receiving fruit in March 2004. The remaining four regions (South East, Yorkshire & Humber, South West and East of England) will all come on stream in Autumn 2004, and therefore all eligible schools and attached nursery classes in those regions will be contacted at some point over the next two terms and invited to join the scheme. Participation by schools is on a voluntary basis but the scheme is available to all.
