FE Golden Hellos for full-time, part-time and hourly paid teachers
Recruitment and retention are key issues facing managers in Further Education
(FE) institutions. FE institutions are independent corporations and each
institution and their governing body is responsible for the recruitment and
retention, pay, terms and conditions of service of its staff. The Government
originally outlined in 'Success for All' (reforming Further Education
and Training) its commitment to help FE institutions increase the
attractiveness of a career in the FE sector. The FE White Paper Raising
Skills, Improving Life Chances (March 2006) set out the programme of
reforms for FE including those around teacher training and qualifications.
The Government also offers recruitment and retention initiatives to attract new teachers into the FE sector:
Golden Hellos for teachers in FE and others
Golden Hellos are available to full-time, part-time and hourly-paid teachers who have completed their first year of teaching, are in their second year of teaching and contracted for a further term or more. They provide a one-off payment of up to £4000 to new teachers in designated shortage subject areas in England (£5000 for teachers who teach pure mathematics, science or construction). The initiative is administered by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
