The role of the governing body

The governing body will need to ensure that the school has a detailed school-security policy, possibly as part of the health and safety policy.

The policy may need to include such things as:

  • How the governors exercise their responsibilities (for example, whether there is a sub-committee or an individual governor with specific responsibility for security)
  • Arrangements for consulting and informing all staff about security
  • Financial, physical and human resourcing in the event of a security incident
  • Arrangements for monitoring and reviewing the policy, including the frequency and form of reports from the head teacher
  • The nature of governors' statutory annual reports to parents on security
