EU teaching resources

The EU is a complex subject, and teaching it can at first seem daunting. However, there are many useful online resources available to help you make it an interesting and accessible topic for pupils.

The British Council, in conjunction with the DCSF, maintains a European zone on the Global Gateway which contains Europe-themed lesson plans, activity ideas and case studies of school partnerships and projects. These are aimed at primary and secondary pupils in a one-stop shop to help you incorporate Europe into the curriculum. There is also a section of useful links which brings together the best the web has to offer in Europe resources.

Produced by the European Commission, Europe in 12 easy lessons is an excellent starting point for preparing to introduce the European Union. Each themed lesson deals with a key EU issue, such as enlargement, or the single market, and includes key facts and statistics.

The Standards Site has schemes of work for teaching issues such as the European Union and the European single currency (both suitable for Key Stage 4) as part of the citizenship curriculum.

A Guide to the European Union is produced by the Foreign and Commonwealth office and gives an overview of how the EU works and how it impacts on people's lives.

The Treasury's Euro website has information on the introduction of the single currency and details of euro notes and coins.
