Round One (announced 15 March 2001)
About 7,000 schools won awards in round one, equivalent to 30% of maintained schools in England. Awards were given to schools where pupils' results in 2000 were substantially better than in 1997 or where results in 2000 were better than most schools in similar circumstances in that year. Approximately £60 million was distributed to award-winning schools through the Standards Fund. A typical primary school received about £5,000 and a typical secondary school about £25,000.

Round Two (announced 22 March 2002)
School Achievement Awards were announced for the
second time on 22 March 2002. Nearly 7,100
schools won awards in round two, (equivalent to 30% of maintained schools
in England). Awards were given to schools
where pupils' results in 2001 were substantially better than in 1998 or
where results in 2001 were better than most schools in similar circumstances in
that year. Approximately £60 million was distributed to
award-winning schools through the Standards Fund. A typical primary school
received about £5,500 and a typical secondary school about
£25,000
