Breaking the link
Across English schools, at all levels, standards have risen. However the difference between the attainment of the most advantaged pupils and the least advantaged has remained stubbornly large. Compared to other developed countries, average standards in this country are good, but the achievement gap between the least advantaged and the average is wide.
This document sets out a challenge to everyone involved in education or in supporting the development of children and young people: to begin systematically to break the link between deprivation and low educational attainment. Of course this cannot be a task for schools alone and is also one for the wider children's service and for all those working with families and communities facing deprivation. The school's contribution however can be decisive.
This document sets out the evidence, highlights some existing good practice
and sets out a policy direction for the future. It is available to download or
order free of charge from TeacherNet Online Publications.
