A crucible furnace is a casting facility, in which metal is melted in a pot (the crucible) inside a furnace, before being poured into a mould, usually constructed from sand. A sand-tray beneath where molten metal is poured contains any spillage. The furnace must be kept well away from water, as contact can cause the molten aluminium- or zinc-based alloys used in the furnace to explode. To reduce the danger from explosion, the furnace should be located in a corner, preventing pupils standing all around it. As casting will always be demonstrated or closely supervised by the teacher, there should always be sufficient space available for pupils to observe the procedures.
