Introduction

On 29 March 2004 the Secretary of State announced a new extended remit for the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) to include training for the wider school workforce and a strengthened commitment to continuing professional development for teachers.

The TTA has already taken on the role of developing training and assessment for support staff who are aiming to achieve higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) status. Support staff with the status will take on an enhanced role in the classroom to allow teachers to better support pupils' learning.

There are now 36 organisations around England approved to provide training and assessment for people interested in achieving HLTA status. It is estimated that over 7,000 places will be available in 2004-05 and training will begin from May this year.
