Apply for a free energy display meter for your school
Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, is today launching a new initiative to offer you an energy display meter that will enable your school to monitor and measure its electricity use. This offer is based on a recommendation from the Department's Zero Carbon Task Force. The meter will be installed free of charge and there will be a supporting information pack on how to make the most of it in your school.
The benefits of installing this meter in your school include the following:
- Your electricity bills should reduce as the whole school begins to understand the impact of their actions on energy consumption. This will help to raise general energy awareness and may also lead to a reduction in other energy costs.
- It will support teaching and learning by helping to embed energy awareness and the wider sustainability agenda across the curriculum.
- It will help your school to play its part in addressing climate change and looking after the planet. This is now likely to be a major concern for many of your students.
Further details are available from the Energy display meters section on TeacherNet. We would also be grateful if you could try to ensure that your students see the factsheet about the energy display meters. The factsheet is also available on TeacherNet.
If you want to find out more about how reducing your energy bills fits in with the wider sustainability agenda, visit the Department's Sustainable Schools website.
Please also note that the Department will publish a carbon management strategy for the schools sector in spring 2010. We intend to work with schools and local authorities to radically reduce the schools sector's carbon footprint in support of the Government's commitment to reduce UK emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.
