Numeracy

The National Numeracy Strategy (NNS) was launched in 1998 and has been formally implemented in classrooms since September 1999. NNS enables teachers to provide pupils with a firm foundation in Mathematics and sets ambitious targets for raising standards in these key skills.

In October 2006 the Department published the renewed Primary Framework. It is available online with links to a range of supporting guidance, or as a hard copy from Online Publications for Schools. Packs will be sent to all schools containing an introduction to the Framework, the Framework objectives and posters. A DVD-Rom will follow to provide access to the interactive Framework offline.

Mathematics publications
The Primary National Strategy continues to produce a wide range of publications in support of its activities. All publications are available to order or download. Recent publications include The Primary Framework for literacy and mathematics: core position papers underpinning the renewal of guidance for teaching literacy and mathematics, indicating some of the most important aspects of the Framework.

Mathematics teaching resources
The Primary National Strategy produces a range of resources to support teachers in the classroom. Currently, there are over 300 different teaching resources available on the Primary Strategy website; over half focus on mathematics teaching and learning. You can search for an interactive teaching programme or unit plans for a particular year group and term.

Unit plans have been written to provide teachers with:

  • guidance and support for planning mathematics lessons
  • a link between planning from the Framework for teaching mathematics and medium-term plans
  • a structure for their planning that reduces workload
  • support for planning the content, pace and pitch of lessons.
